Principal Materials Scientist (Semiconductor)

Location: Wilmington, Massachusetts, United States; work involves laboratory, manufacturing, and office environments.

Salary: $126,200–$210,350 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Lead research, evaluation, and development of advanced materials, coatings, ceramics, and metals for products and manufacturing processes.
• Provide technical leadership for material selection, qualification, reliability improvement, and root cause investigations.
• Design and execute material characterization, testing, modeling, and failure analysis using microscopy, spectroscopy, surface analysis, and thermal or mechanical testing.
• Drive materials innovation initiatives and technology roadmaps while optimizing performance, cost, manufacturability, and material availability.
• Collaborate with engineering, product management, operations, quality, supply chain, customers, suppliers, and external research partners.
• Mentor engineers and scientists, publish technical findings, and support intellectual property development and industry collaborations.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
• 12+ years of industry experience in materials research, product development, or advanced technology environments.
• Expertise in materials characterization, materials reliability, degradation mechanisms, and failure analysis.
• Experience developing and qualifying materials for demanding industrial, semiconductor, electronics, vacuum, plasma, or related applications.
• Ability to lead complex technical projects and influence decisions across multidisciplinary teams, with strong analytical, communication, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
• Experience with Design of Experiments, statistical analysis, and modeling tools; the role requires up to 20% travel.

Nice to have

• Ph.D. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
• Experience with semiconductor capital equipment, advanced packaging, vacuum systems, plasma applications, or advanced manufacturing technologies.
• Expertise in thin films, coatings, surface engineering, ceramics, specialty metals, or advanced composites.
• Experience with manufacturing scale-up, materials commercialization, external research collaborations, intellectual property, and technology roadmaps.
