Principal Product Manager (Payments)

Location: Chicago, United States; on-site

Base salary: $175,000–$225,000 USD per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Own the approval-rate and loss-rate tradeoff across the platform and define risk policies.
• Work with data science to productize risk models with clear thresholds, monitoring, and failure behavior.
• Partner with finance to analyze portfolio and merchant exposure and develop pricing and policy recommendations.
• Build merchant-facing decision transparency, controls, and reporting.
• Evaluate and integrate risk signal providers, data sources, and decisioning infrastructure.
• Make product decisions with incomplete data and instrument systems to accelerate learning.

Requirements

• 7+ years of product management experience, including ownership of a technically complex or regulated product area.
• Experience with lending, BNPL, issuing, insurance, risk, or payments products where incorrect decisions created direct company losses.
• Strong understanding of expected loss, unit economics, revenue, and exposure.
• Experience productizing models and managing precision/recall tradeoffs in production.
• Ability to ship end to end from ambiguous problems without a predefined roadmap.
• Strong communication with engineering, data science, finance, compliance, commercial, and merchant stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Fraud, underwriting, or credit risk product experience.
• Cross-border payments experience across different markets, payment rails, regulators, and fraud patterns.
• Product experience under regulatory constraints such as NACHA, MiCA, BSA/AML, or PSD2.
• Actuarial, quantitative finance, or data science background.
