Senior Staff Geotechnical Engineer

Location: San Diego, California, USA; in-office

Salary: $75,000–$90,000 per year, depending on qualifications

What you will do

• Conduct geotechnical investigations and engineering analyses for commercial, residential, industrial, and public works projects.
• Plan subsurface exploration programs, including boring layouts and utility clearance activities.
• Oversee drilling operations and direct drill crews and subcontractors in the field.
• Classify soils and geologic materials, prepare logs, perform field observations, and support construction activities.
• Coordinate laboratory testing, evaluate field and laboratory data, and perform technical calculations.
• Prepare geotechnical reports, technical memoranda, letters, and engineering recommendations while collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of geotechnical engineering experience, preferably with a geotechnical consulting firm.
• Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical principles, subsurface investigation methods, and geotechnical reporting.
• Ability to perform technical calculations and interpret laboratory and field data.
• Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience with software for slope stability, settlement, liquefaction, and foundation analyses.
• Construction observation and geotechnical field support experience.
• Engineer-in-Training certification or progress toward professional licensure.
• Familiarity with Southern California geologic and geotechnical conditions.
