TL;DR
Field Geologist/Geotechnical Specialist (Geotechnical Investigations): Overseeing drilling, sampling, subsurface exploration, and field testing while documenting soil, groundwater, and rock conditions for geotechnical project delivery with an accent on boring logs, classification, safety, and data quality. Focus on coordinating drilling programs, performing infiltration testing, maintaining detailed field records, and translating site observations into subsurface data for engineering analyses.

Location: Lehigh Valley, Wilkes-Barre, or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or Wilmington, Delaware; primarily field-based with approximately 90% travel and overnight stays near project sites.

Salary: $60,000–$85,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Oversee geotechnical drilling, sampling, test pits, utility clearance, and subsurface exploration activities.
  • Log and describe soil, rock, groundwater, lithology, sample depths, and drilling observations in accordance with industry standards.
  • Perform field testing, including infiltration testing based on applicable stormwater best management practices.
  • Maintain complete field documentation and communicate site conditions, activities, and data collection progress to engineers and project managers.
  • Create and implement project Health and Safety Plans and maintain safe, clean, and organized work areas.
  • Coordinate with geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, design teams, contractors, and other disciplines to support project delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • 1–3+ years of experience with geotechnical logging or related field work.
  • Knowledge of soil and rock classification, including the Unified Soil Classification System.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or the ability to obtain it within six months; GIT or EIT is preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors, perform physically demanding field work, carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally, and stay overnight near worksites for several weeks.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing and ability to operate company vehicles safely.

Nice to have

  • Certified PennDOT Drilling Inspector credential.
  • Experience with BoreDM, gINT, ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, GPS equipment, and field data collection technology.
