TL;DR
Design and Release Engineering - Fastening (Automotive): Designing, selecting, and validating mechanical fasteners and bolted joints for vehicle systems with an accent on joint strength, manufacturability, torque specifications, and durability. Focus on performing clamp-load and joint calculations, validating torque-tension performance, resolving fastener failures, and coordinating implementation with vehicle engineering, manufacturing, plants, and suppliers.

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan; on-site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week. This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

What you will do

  • Design and analyze threaded and non-threaded joints, including bolts, nuts, retainers, studs, and washers, for vehicle components and systems.
  • Select fasteners using catalogs, engineering standards, and part classification tools.
  • Perform joint calculations covering clamp load, torque, joint slip, thread engagement, and strength.
  • Develop and maintain fastening and tightening specifications in line with GM standards.
  • Support design reviews, manufacturing implementation, torque-tension testing, joint audits, and plant torque correlation studies.
  • Investigate fastener failures, loosening, warranty concerns, and assembly problems, supporting root-cause analysis and corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanics of materials, including stress and strain, fatigue, preload, and friction, plus basic machine design.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and basic CAD models.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills for cross-functional work with design, manufacturing, supplier quality, and plant teams.
  • Must be able to work on-site in Warren, Michigan, at least three days per week.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, or J-1 support.

Nice to have

  • Co-op, internship, or project experience with bolted joints or torque-tightening assembly processes.
  • Familiarity with fastener standards, metric property classes, strength tables, and torque-tension principles.
  • Exposure to manufacturing environments using mechanical fasteners.
  • Experience with torque-tension or joint-design analysis tools and calculators.
