Fastener Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Garden Grove, California, United States; domestic travel up to 20% required.

Salary: $140,000–$180,000 USD annually.

What you will do

• Author and maintain fastener standards, sizing spreadsheets, supplier quality requirements, and specifications for bolts, nuts, Huks, and shims.
• Define tightening strategies, test bolts and joints, validate torque-plus-angle processes, and review production torque data.
• Oversee structural fastener installation, production quality audits, and fastening data collection.
• Lead joint validation testing, including torque-to-failure and push-out/pull-out testing.
• Establish in-process monitoring criteria using torque/angle signatures and yield-point validation.
• Evaluate Geomet and Zinc-Nickel coating systems for corrosion resistance and consistent friction factors.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 5 years of relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of relevant experience.
• At least 5 years of experience in fastener engineering or assembly joining, including joint validation and bolt testing.
• Experience with DC nutrunners, multi-spindle fixtures, structural riveting tools, closed-loop controllers, and MES integration.
• Knowledge of metric ISO 261/262 and imperial SAE J429 fastener specifications, including property classes 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9.
• Experience with carbon steel fastener manufacturing, Zinc-Nickel and Geomet coatings, fastening data, torque/angle signatures, and lot traceability.
• Willingness to travel domestically up to 20% for supplier audits, assembly plant support, and testing.

Nice to have

• Factory Acceptance Testing experience for multi-spindle fixtures and Cpk validation for torque/angle repeatability.
• Expertise in 8D root cause analysis for cross-threading, strip detection, and collar swage failures.
• Knowledge of durability, payload requirements, and failure modes in the medium-duty delivery and logistics sector.
