Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Communications Platform) (Java)

Location: New York City; hybrid role requiring attendance at the NYC office 3 days per week

Salary: $185,500–$299,000 USD annual cash compensation

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of email delivery, in-product notification, and push notification platforms.
• Define technical strategy for platform modernization, reliability hardening, and backend engineering standards.
• Write high-quality Java code and lead design reviews, code reviews, and architectural decisions.
• Mentor backend and frontend engineers in system design, decision-making, and ownership.
• Identify and resolve systemic risks involving performance, reliability, security, and operability.
• Partner with multiple teams and stakeholders on architecture initiatives while balancing delivery with long-term platform health.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience building and operating large-scale, customer-facing systems.
• Deep expertise in Java and backend service development, including APIs, asynchronous processing, messaging systems, and data stores.
• Production experience with distributed systems, reliability, scaling, failure modes, and observability.
• Technical leadership experience at Staff or Senior-plus level, influencing architecture across multiple teams or services.
• Experience modernizing legacy platforms and improving reliability without unnecessary rewrites.
• Strong communication, mentorship, collaboration, and inclusive technical leadership skills.

• Experience with multi-channel communication infrastructure, including email delivery, push notifications, and in-product notifications.
