Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Remote, based in Ireland. Occasional travel may be required for project or team meetings.

What you will do

• Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate real-time Voice services with high throughput and low latency.
• Own and maintain services in a distributed production environment, including on-call support and incident response.
• Collaborate with product managers, stakeholders, architects, and cross-functional teams to deliver scalable customer-focused solutions.
• Scale a globally distributed platform focused on high availability, reliability, throughput, latency, and media fidelity.
• Drive technical design, architectural decisions, documentation, sprint planning, and continuous delivery.
• Mentor engineers and lead cross-functional technical initiatives.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of hands-on experience with large-scale distributed applications using JVM-based technologies.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field, with strong fundamentals in algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems.
• Strong Java experience, including architecture, code review, debugging, RESTful services, API design, and event-driven architectures with Kafka or SQS.
• Experience optimizing CI/CD pipelines, scaling backend systems and data tiers, and working with SQL/NoSQL databases and caching technologies.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, OpenStack, or Azure, plus monitoring and alerting tools including Prometheus, Datadog, or Grafana.
• Excellent written communication, experience with AI coding assistants, and the ability to evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of the SIP protocol.
• Knowledge of the Stir/Shaken protocol.
• Demonstrated ability to use AI effectively to deliver value.
