Systems Engineer (R2 Gateway)

Location: Austin, Texas, United States (Hybrid). An in-person interview at a hirify.global office or hub may be required at the offer stage.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway serving all hirify.global R2 operations.
• Build and operate high-throughput production services on hirify.global Workers and Kubernetes.
• Own the request path, including authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, error handling, and storage-layer interfaces.
• Deliver projects from design documentation through implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
• Improve gateway reliability, performance, observability, and operational efficiency while handling unfamiliar and legacy code paths.
• Participate in on-call rotations, resolve incidents, write postmortems, use AI tools in daily development, and coordinate with storage, metadata, networking, and platform teams.

Requirements

• Strong programming skills in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
• Experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems with demanding latency and reliability requirements.
• Experience designing and operating high-throughput APIs, including authentication, routing, rate limiting, and backward-compatible evolution.
• Knowledge of cloud infrastructure concepts such as object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing, or service-oriented architectures.
• Understanding of monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, incident response, and observability practices.
• Must be able to work from the Austin, Texas area in a hybrid arrangement. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with the S3 API surface, hirify.global Workers, Durable Objects, or edge computing platforms.
• Experience using AI coding tools as part of a daily development workflow.
