TL;DR
Sr. Manufacturing Engineer (Rare-Earth Magnets): Developing and scaling manufacturing systems for rare-earth permanent magnets across equipment design, commissioning, process qualification, and production startup with an accent on equipment selection, process ownership, and stable high-volume production. Focus on optimizing throughput and quality, managing vendor and technical deliverables, and solving commissioning, reliability, safety, and scale-up challenges.

Location: Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, United States (Hybrid). Some travel for equipment development reviews and Factory Acceptance Tests is expected, estimated at less than 10%.

What you will do

  • Lead technical and financial evaluations, quote comparisons, and vendor selection for advanced manufacturing equipment.
  • Own a major production process from equipment requirements and vendor management through commissioning, process development, qualification, startup, and scale-up.
  • Optimize manufacturing processes, throughput, quality, equipment reliability, OEE, station cycle times, yield, and capacity.
  • Manage technical schedules, budgets, deliverables, and milestones.
  • Provide hands-on production startup support and eliminate early bottlenecks.
  • Develop future process and equipment strategies in collaboration with R&D while maintaining EHS and quality compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of experience, or a master’s degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience creating, modifying, and validating complex equipment assemblies in CAD.
  • Experience with custom equipment design, vendor management, and full-cycle commissioning for industrial processes.
  • Expertise in developing PFMEAs, Control Plans, Work Instructions, Process Flows, and other manufacturing documentation.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create electrical schematics and pneumatic diagrams, including related engineering calculations.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities.

Nice to have

  • Experience in heavy industrial manufacturing, metallurgy, magnetics, or chemical processing.
  • Experience with advanced simulation software for workflow and line balancing.
  • Hands-on machine vision programming experience with systems such as Cognex or Keyence.
  • Familiarity with MES implementation and transaction mapping.
  • Experience in regulated defense, aerospace, or automotive industries.
