Sr. Manufacturing Design Engineer - eMotor (eVTOL)

Location: San Jose, California, United States; onsite role

Salary: $126,700–$158,400 base pay annually

What you will do

• Lead design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly initiatives for electric propulsion systems, collaborating with product design, quality, and facilities teams.
• Plan and execute prototype builds, process trials, custom tooling development, equipment qualification, and production ramp-up.
• Define specifications for automation equipment, tools, and fixtures, and manage vendor development through final acceptance testing.
• Develop plant line layouts, part-flow strategies, manufacturing methods, build plans, and Manufacturing Bills of Materials.
• Establish PFMEAs, validation and calibration protocols, and standardized work instructions for defect-free assembly.
• Monitor pilot-line performance, lead root-cause corrective actions, and optimize cycle times and OEE for mass production.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering and 3–6+ years of hands-on experience; EV, automotive, or aerospace experience is preferred.
• Hands-on experience building and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic assemblies with advanced automated manufacturing equipment.
• Expertise in Statistical Process Control, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and engineering drawing reviews.
• Experience scaling production lines from prototype builds through high-volume mass production.
• Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC, 8D, or 5-Why problem-solving methods.
• Daily working proficiency with CAD, PLM, MES, and ERP systems, plus strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

• Manufacturing experience with EV drive units, including rotor, stator, or gearbox assembly.
• Experience programming or troubleshooting industrial robots, gantries, and PLCs.
• Knowledge of high-voltage wiring, battery modules, and electric motor safety standards.
• Familiarity with eVTOL systems, aircraft configuration management, and airworthiness conformity processes.
• Experience with preventive or predictive maintenance programs and willingness to travel up to 10% for vendor oversight and equipment integration.
