Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer (R&D)

Location: On-site in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, United States. The role covers office, engineering, laboratory, and manufacturing environments. Full-time work is primarily during core business hours, with flexibility based on project and operational requirements. Some travel to company facilities, suppliers, customers, trade events, and project partners is required.

What you will do

• Design and develop electro-mechanical products, subsystems, test fixtures, technology demonstrators, assemblies, drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of material.
• Translate customer, market, and technical requirements into concepts and detailed designs integrating mechanical systems with sensors, motors, actuators, controls, power supplies, communication devices, and embedded technologies.
• Own prototype builds, bench testing, design verification, validation, field trials, test methods, data acquisition, and acceptance criteria.
• Analyze test data, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective design actions.
• Participate in Stage-Gate product development, design reviews, risk and cost reviews, production-readiness activities, pilot production, product launches, and transition to normal production.
• Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, product, sales, service, suppliers, customers, and end users to improve manufacturability, quality, serviceability, cost, safety, and product performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• 5+ years of experience developing electro-mechanical products, automation, industrial equipment, or engineered systems in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience integrating mechanical designs with electrical components, sensors, actuators, motors, controls, or embedded systems.
• Strong experience with 3D CAD, engineering drawings, bills of material, prototyping, testing, and technical design documentation.
• Experience with formal Stage-Gate or New Product Development processes, structured project-management platforms, Design for Manufacturability, product validation, and structured problem-solving.
• Strong hands-on prototyping, troubleshooting, experimentation, and laboratory skills, with the ability to work across CAD/design, electrical and mechanical integration, manufacturing, and customer applications.

Nice to have

• SolidWorks or SolidWorks PDM and electrical schematic/design software experience.
• Experience with tooling, machining, metal forming, industrial equipment, robotics, automation, or discrete manufacturing.
• Knowledge of PLCs, embedded controllers, industrial communications, data acquisition, or connected/IoT-enabled products.
• Experience with FMEA, tolerance analysis, statistical methods, Lean product development, or Design for Six Sigma.
• Experience working with suppliers and customers or supporting patents and intellectual-property processes.
