TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer (Robotics) (robot hardware): Designing, building, and shipping mechanical components and subassemblies for high-performance robots with an accent on mechanisms, structures, joints, packaging, and production readiness. Focus on first-principles analysis, FEA, hands-on hardware bring-up, system integration, validation, and transitioning prototypes into high-volume manufacturing.

What you will do

  • Design and deliver robotic mechanical components and subassemblies, including mechanisms, structures, joints, linkages, housings, bearing systems, and sensor and electronics packaging.
  • Perform component sizing and validation using hand calculations, FEA, tolerance stack-ups, structural and fatigue analysis, stiffness evaluation, thermal analysis, and load-path assessment.
  • Own designs from concept through DFM/DFA, prototype builds, production release, and collaboration with manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Work with systems, controls, electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to translate robot-level requirements into integrated mechanical designs.
  • Lead hardware bring-up, design reviews, component and robot-level testing, performance characterization, and failure root-cause analysis.
  • Contribute to mechanical design standards and share technical knowledge across the organization.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience delivering mechanical or electromechanical products from concept through production, or an MS degree plus 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong experience designing mechanical systems with mechanisms, structures, joints, bearings, housings, material selection, and mechanical packaging.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX, along with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Ability to use hand calculations and FEA for structural, fatigue, stiffness, and thermal design decisions.
  • Hands-on experience building, instrumenting, testing, integrating, and troubleshooting mechanical or electromechanical hardware.
  • Strong communication, ownership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with robotic systems, especially humanoid, mobile, or manipulation robots.
  • Experience designing articulated joints, limbs, end effectors, linkages, or lightweight structural assemblies.
  • Experience integrating actuators, sensors, electronics, wiring, and thermal systems into tightly packaged assemblies.
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing of precision mechanical components.
