TL;DR
Hardware Engineer (Robotics): Designing and scaling hardware systems for autonomous heavy construction equipment with an accent on rugged sensors, mechanical and electrical design, and field reliability. Focus on analyzing vibration and shock data, developing lifecycle testing setups, streamlining manufacturing processes, and debugging complex hardware issues across a deployed robot fleet.

Location: San Francisco, California, USA; regular travel to job sites 1–2 times per month and installations across the United States and Australia.

Salary: $120,000–$175,000 annual base salary, plus potential equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Re-imagine, design, and scale hardware systems for a fleet of autonomous heavy construction equipment.
  • Source and configure rugged sensors for environments involving heat, cold, rain, vibration, shock, and dust.
  • Improve equipment reliability and longevity through vibration and shock analysis and mechanically robust mounting designs.
  • Design setups for lifecycle testing and create repeatable manufacturing processes for AI guidance systems.
  • Install hardware on equipment, develop fleet-management best practices, and troubleshoot field issues.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and field teams to resolve complex hardware problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Onshape, or Fusion 360.
  • At least 2 years of experience in electrical design.
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and willingness to learn new skills in changing field environments.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites 1–2 times per month.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with Python, Linux, and ROS.
