TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer II (Nuclear Energy): Designing the Power Conversion System hardware that integrates turbomachinery, motor-generators, recuperators, and heat exchangers into a testable microreactor power plant with an accent on pressure boundaries, thermal growth, rotating machinery alignment, and high-temperature materials. Focus on carrying first-of-a-kind hardware from concept through fabrication, assembly, instrumentation, and testing while resolving mechanical interfaces, leak-tightness, maintainability, and structural loads.

Location: Torrance, California, United States

Salary: $145,000–$185,000 per year, plus stock options.

Company

hirify.global is a Series C startup developing mass-producible, inherently safe nuclear microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.

What you will do

  • Own the Power Conversion System mechanical arrangement and pressure budget, including evaluation of parasitic losses and cycle performance.
  • Design leak-tight working-fluid pressure boundaries with piping, joints, penetrations, isolation, and pressure-retention features.
  • Develop supports, anchors, alignments, skid or module layouts, maintenance architecture, and mechanical interfaces for rotating machinery, the reactor, and safety systems.
  • Design high-temperature, high-stress components using metals and advanced materials in collaboration with materials and structural analysis specialists.
  • Support test-rig design, instrumentation placement, pressure and leak verification, and use test data to improve component life and performance.
  • Carry designs through manufacturability and assembly reviews, fabrication, commissioning, bring-up, troubleshooting, and testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience for Senior Engineer-level work, including hands-on CAD, analysis, fabrication support, and testing.
  • Experience designing pressure-retaining or leak-tight fluid hardware and supporting pressure and leak verification.
  • Experience releasing production-intent mechanical drawings and models, including GD&T and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Experience with elevated-temperature or high-stress hardware, material selection, and mechanical interfaces across integrated assemblies.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. export authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience in nuclear, aerospace, automotive, power generation, motorsports, or oil and gas.
  • Knowledge of ASME B31.3 or ASME BPVC Section VIII, compressible flow, pressure-drop modeling, piping flexibility, or structural FEA.
  • Experience packaging rotating machinery, high-temperature systems, modular plants, or skid-mounted equipment.
  • Experience with NX, ANSYS, Femap, product lifecycle software, commissioning first-of-a-kind hardware, or test-driven design changes.

Culture & Benefits

  • Significant stock option package in addition to the salary.
  • Work on advanced nuclear energy systems for climate, defense, and space applications.
  • Large facility with dedicated collaboration, R&D, and production spaces.
  • Emphasis on systems thinking, end-user focus, unconventional solutions, in-person collaboration, and operating in ambiguity.
