TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer - Thermal and Ducting (Aerospace): Designing thermal management and inlet/exhaust ducting systems for prototype electric aircraft powertrain components with an accent on duct performance, pressure drop, thermal efficiency, and structural integration. Focus on developing prototype hardware, selecting pumps and sensors, completing FEA and handbook calculations, and validating designs through rigorous aerospace testing.

Location: San Jose, California, United States

Base pay: $144,000–$198,000 per year

Company

hirify.global is an aerospace company developing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for sustainable air mobility.

What you will do

  • Design thermal management and inlet/exhaust ducting systems for prototype aircraft powertrain components, including generators and turboshaft engines.
  • Collaborate with aerothermal analysts, structural analysts, powertrain engineers, and airframe teams to optimize performance and ensure strength, stiffness, fatigue, and integration requirements.
  • Own prototype development from requirements, CAD design, bills of materials, procurement, and assembly through testing.
  • Select and integrate pumps, lines, fittings, sensors, and appropriate commercial off-the-shelf solutions.
  • Perform handbook calculations and FEA to verify system performance and component margins.
  • Create and review technical drawings, manufacturing plans, specifications, and verification testing strategies, including DO-160G testing.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of engineering experience and a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience integrating thermal systems or air-breathing turbomachinery.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks or NX and the ability to manage complex assemblies in Teamcenter.
  • Familiarity with aerospace hardware and fastener standards, metallic parts, machined components, sheet metal, and weldments.
  • Proficiency in FEA using tools such as NASTRAN, ANSYS, or Abaqus.
  • Fluency in GD&T, manufacturing drawings, and hands-on work involving carbon composites, sheet-metal ducting, and metallic structures.

Nice to have

  • Degree or equivalent background in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with electric powertrain or aerospace systems.
  • Knowledge of product development, manufacturing processes, and global supply chain management.
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience taking aircraft from concept and prototype through certification and mass production.

Culture & Benefits

  • Pay-for-performance culture with compensation based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Commitment to an equitable, inclusive, and diverse workplace.
  • Reasonable accommodations are available throughout the application and hiring process.
