TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer - Core Mechanical Design (Advanced Reactors): Designing core assemblies and components for advanced fission reactors from concept through final design with an accent on manufacturability, inspectability, and controlled engineering documentation. Focus on developing detailed CAD models and drawings, performing tolerance and DFM/DFA reviews, and coordinating thermal, structural, fatigue, and safety analyses for design validation.

Location: Santa Clara, California or remote within the United States. Remote employees must travel to the Santa Clara headquarters twice per quarter based on business or team needs, and the first two weeks of onboarding must be completed in person at headquarters.

Salary: $115,000–$170,000 per year

What you will do

  • Design core assemblies and components for advanced reactors from concept through final design.
  • Develop drawings, product and material specifications, design basis documents, and calculation documents.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and bills of materials using controlled PDM/PLM processes.
  • Conduct design reviews and evaluate mechanical designs to identify deficiencies and implement solutions.
  • Coordinate with analysis teams on thermal, structural, fatigue, and safety analyses for design validation.
  • Perform manufacturability reviews, tolerance studies, and DFM/DFA assessments for fabrication and assembly.

Requirements

  • 3–10 years of industry experience in mechanical or structural design within aerospace, automotive, energy, or industrial equipment.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling, including part modeling, large assemblies, and detailed drawings.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM tools and CAD version control.
  • Understanding of DFM, DFA, tolerance stack-up analysis, material selection, manufacturing methods, and fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to apply GD&T according to ASME Y14.5-2018 or a similar standard and collaborate with analysis, manufacturing, systems engineering, suppliers, and consultants.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing high-integrity or safety-critical systems in nuclear, aerospace, defense, or heavy industry.
  • Experience leading hardware projects through design, testing, and production.
  • Knowledge of precision machine design, inspection processes, and high-temperature thermal-mechanical design.
  • Knowledge of nuclear fission and radiation effects on materials and components.
  • Exposure to ANSYS, Python, SolidWorks, or ASME GD&T Professional certification.
