Senior Backend Engineer Amsterdam Distributed Systems (AWS)

Salary: €85,000–€100,000 per year, plus €20,000 in stock options

What you will do

• Design, implement, deploy, monitor, and continuously improve backend services throughout their lifecycle.
• Build and operate distributed, asynchronous, and event-driven systems supporting transaction-heavy payment infrastructure.
• Improve availability, correctness, observability, reliability, and scalability across production systems.
• Investigate dependency failures, duplicate events, unsafe retries, incorrect state, and other distributed-systems challenges.
• Respond to production incidents and drive long-term resilience improvements.
• Contribute to technical direction, mentoring, engineering standards, and architectural decisions as responsibilities grow.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience as a backend software engineer.
• Proven experience designing, building, and operating production systems with significant reliability and correctness requirements.
• Experience with distributed systems, asynchronous processing, or event-driven architecture.
• Strong computer science fundamentals and first-principles reasoning, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly.
• Experience with cloud-native environments, preferably AWS, and strong knowledge of reliability, observability, testing, and scalability.
• Strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, openness to feedback, and an interest in mentoring engineers.

Nice to have

• Completed technical MSc.
• Experience in payments, fintech, banking, billing, checkout, trading, marketplaces, or other transaction-heavy domains.
