TL;DR
Mechanical Engineering Intern (Spring 2027) (Additive Manufacturing): Designing, prototyping, testing, and integrating mechanical components and systems for autonomous metal 3D printing factories with an accent on precision motion systems, thermal and fluid subsystems, and manufacturability. Focus on owning cradle-to-grave projects, performing tolerance analysis, and solving complex mechanical integration and reliability challenges.

Location: Los Angeles, CA; on-site at the Hawthorne, CA facility

Compensation: $30/hour for undergraduate interns, $32.50/hour for master's interns, or $35/hour for PhD interns.

What you will do

  • Own a cradle-to-grave project delivering capabilities for critical print-factory systems.
  • Design, build, prototype, and test mechanical components, subassemblies, and systems.
  • Perform tolerance analyses and mechanical feasibility studies.
  • Participate in hands-on builds, subsystem integration, and mechanical system validation.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and senior mechanical engineers to improve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering at an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Hands-on design experience from internships, engineering clubs, or similar projects.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to use a first-principles approach to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to work on-site in the Los Angeles/Hawthorne, California area.

Nice to have

  • Master's or PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Knowledge of motion control and kinematics.
  • Experience designing fluid or thermal systems and working with electromechanical systems.
  • Hands-on, collaborative communication and ownership in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
  • Evidence of academic excellence, engineering leadership, resilience, or achievement against adversity.
