Director, Systems Software (Quantum Computing)

Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom. Travel as needed.

What you will do

• Lead a software organisation of approximately 20 engineers, with responsibility for future team growth.
• Plan and manage development of the full software stack, including real-time control and monitoring, intermediate representation, quantum compilation, and application demonstrations.
• Define modular software components that can be developed and released independently.
• Build and maintain long-term roadmaps, manage the backlog, capture requirements, and align conflicting priorities with company timelines.
• Establish development, DevOps, release, triage, and third-line support processes.
• Support team performance, wellbeing, career development, and collaboration with engineering, science, and project management teams.

Requirements

• Proven experience managing a software organisation containing dozens of engineers and subject-matter experts.
• Strong record of setting priorities, communicating expectations, and delivering quality software for internal and external customers.
• Technical background in multiple areas such as real-time embedded software, compiler or assembler development, graph algorithms, system monitoring, or data-centre deployments.
• Pragmatic understanding of standard software development processes in a growing high-tech organisation.
• Excellent technical and organisational communication skills across internal teams and external stakeholders.
• The software stack uses Python and Rust; previous quantum-systems experience is not required.

Nice to have

• Experience with branching and release practices.
• Experience organising internal triage and customer support as an external user base grows.
• Experience tracking feature delivery, including scoping, estimation, release planning, and progress tracking.
