R&D Manager - Software (Quantum Computing)

Location: UK, Cambridge; hybrid work with on-site attendance at the Cambridge office some days each week

hirify.global develops quantum computing hardware and software, including programming-language and compiler tools that support quantum processors and developer use cases.

What you will do

• Lead, mentor and develop a software engineering team, supporting performance and career development.
• Define and deliver the technical roadmap with software leadership and senior individual contributors.
• Provide technical leadership across programming languages, compilers and developer tooling.
• Guide software from research and prototyping through testing, documentation and production releases.
• Coordinate interfaces and delivery with research, applications, product, hardware and software teams in the UK and US.
• Recruit, onboard and retain engineers while improving engineering and delivery practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• At least five years of relevant experience in software engineering, compiler or programming-language development, or related technical R&D; relevant postgraduate research may count.
• Demonstrated leadership of technical projects or teams, including technical direction, mentoring and delivery coordination.
• Experience making and communicating architectural decisions for production software, with attention to testing, documentation and maintainability.
• Strong planning and communication skills across technical disciplines.
• Hybrid work in the Cambridge office is required some days each week.

Nice to have

• Experience with quantum software, programming languages, compilers, intermediate representations, runtime systems or execution tooling.
• Understanding of quantum programming models, hardware-software co-design and classical-quantum computing interactions.
• Experience designing or implementing programming languages, type systems, compiler passes or intermediate representations.
• Production software development experience in Rust or Python.
• Experience as a line manager or team lead, with open-source contributions or work with geographically distributed technical teams.
