TL;DR
Additive Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (Metal 3D Printing): Developing and scaling advanced metal additive manufacturing processes across DFAM feedback, print file preparation, toolpath automation, post-processing, and quality control with an accent on analyzing machine and inspection data. Focus on defining test methods, evaluating process improvements, and delivering cradle-to-grave engineering projects for high-volume production.

Location: On-site in Los Angeles, California; facility based in Hawthorne

Compensation: $30/hour for undergraduate interns, $32.50/hour for master's interns, or $35/hour for PhD interns

What you will do

  • Own a cradle-to-grave project supporting critical print-factory capabilities or customer print workflows.
  • Support print development from design for additive manufacturing feedback and file preparation through printing, post-processing, and quality control.
  • Analyze in-situ machine data and post-print part quality to improve system performance.
  • Define test methods, evaluate solutions, iterate quickly, and provide technical recommendations using first-principles thinking.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers across the print development process.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering at an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Hands-on design experience from internships or engineering clubs such as FSAE, Baja SAE, solar car, rocket club, or robotics club.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Comfort taking a first-principles approach to solving complex engineering problems.
  • Willingness to work on-site in the Los Angeles/Hawthorne facility.

Nice to have

  • Master's or PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Experience with metal 3D printing, additive manufacturing process development, DFM, GD&T, or CNC machining.
  • Scripting experience in MATLAB or similar tools for toolpath generation.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and iterating quickly.
  • Strong communication, cross-disciplinary collaboration, ownership, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
