Director, Commercial Law (Legal AI)

Salary: $189,000–$200,000 annually for Los Angeles, California; final compensation varies by work location, experience, skills, certifications, and includes equity stock options.

What you will do

• Lead commercial contract review and manage the full contract lifecycle from drafting and negotiation through execution and termination.
• Revamp contract review and management processes using AI, automation, and measurable efficiency and quality metrics.
• Design, build, deploy, and continuously improve AI tools and agents for contract intake, drafting, redlining, clause extraction, and risk flagging.
• Evaluate and implement legal AI and CLM platforms, managing vendors, integrations, performance, playbooks, and guardrails.
• Advise enterprise revenue, sales, business development, product, privacy, compliance, and other stakeholders on contractual risks and legal requirements.
• Lead direct and skip-level reports while scaling legal operations in a high-growth environment.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and bar membership in good standing.
• 10+ years of experience in an in-house legal team or law firm, including 10+ years drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts.
• Hands-on experience implementing or configuring AI/GenAI tools for legal work, including AI agents, prompt engineering, and model-output evaluation.
• Experience evaluating and implementing legal AI or CLM platforms such as Ironclad, Ivo, Harvey, Spellbook, or Legora, including vendor management and integrations.
• Working knowledge of AI governance, the EU AI Act, state-level AI laws, and data privacy requirements as applied to legal AI tools.
• Proven people-management, mentoring, communication, stakeholder advisory, and commercial contracting experience.
