Director, Data and AI Governance

Location: US - Foster City, CA; hybrid schedule with at least 3 days in the office. Travel required 5–10% of the time.

Salary: $200,000–$320,000 USD per year, with potential bonus and equity eligibility.

What you will do

• Act as the accountable governance representative for assigned business functions and ensure data and AI activities meet applicable policies, standards, controls, and service levels.
• Review data and AI initiatives for completeness and compliance, identify privacy, security, legal, regulatory, ethical, model, and operational risks, and coordinate expert reviews, exceptions, and escalations.
• Advise initiative owners and executives on governance risks, trade-offs, required controls, and risk-based actions.
• Validate control implementation and evidence, challenge unsupported assertions, coordinate remediation, and perform quality assurance and peer reviews.
• Design, develop, test, and improve AI-enabled stewardship agents while maintaining human oversight and accountability.
• Standardize governance inputs, taxonomies, evidence, and decision criteria; redesign workflows and support responsible adoption of agentic capabilities.

Requirements

• 10+ years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree, 8+ years with an advanced degree, or 3+ years with a PhD.
• Experience in data governance, AI governance, risk management, privacy, compliance, cybersecurity, model risk, technology governance, or a related field.
• Experience interpreting policies, standards, controls, or regulatory requirements; validating evidence; and coordinating remediation.
• Hands-on experience reviewing, developing, testing, or governing machine learning, predictive AI, generative AI, or agentic AI solutions across their lifecycle.
• Knowledge of data classification, metadata, lineage, retention, access controls, data quality, model validation, monitoring, inventories, catalogs, and governance workflow tools.
• Strong analytical, communication, organizational, judgment, and stakeholder-influence skills, including the ability to advise executives and provide credible challenge.

Nice to have

• 12+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, 8–10 years with an advanced degree, or 6+ years with a PhD.
• Experience with control testing, quality assurance, audits, regulatory examinations, or issue remediation.
• Experience developing reusable guidance, training, playbooks, automated workflows, or agentic governance processes.
• Relevant professional certification in data governance, privacy, risk, security, compliance, audit, or AI governance.
