Director, Virtual Biology Initiative (AI)

Location: Redwood City, California, United States; hybrid with onsite work required at least 60% of the working month, approximately 3 days per week.

Salary: $244,000–$305,000 base pay annually, plus potential discretionary annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Develop and execute the Virtual Biology Initiative’s external partnership and ecosystem strategy.
• Build relationships with research institutions, technology providers, industry partners, philanthropies, government agencies, and other collaborators.
• Own strategic partnerships from initial engagement through negotiation, launch, and long-term relationship management.
• Structure complex collaborations and cultivate executive-level relationships.
• Coordinate with scientific, technical, legal, policy, and operational teams to advance partnerships and remove execution barriers.
• Help shape governance models, collaborative frameworks, and the initiative’s long-term partnership strategy.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience leading strategic partnerships, business development, ecosystem development, or external collaborations in biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare, AI, or a related field.
• Demonstrated success negotiating and closing complex, multi-party partnerships.
• Experience working across academia, industry, philanthropy, government, or research organizations.
• Scientific fluency for productive engagement with researchers and technical experts.
• Exceptional relationship-building, communication, executive influencing, and cross-functional leadership skills.
• Strong operational discipline and ability to manage multiple strategic initiatives simultaneously.

Nice to have

• Experience with scientific consortia, collaborative research programs, or large multi-institution initiatives.
