TL;DR
Senior Engineer, Motor Control & Calibration (Automotive): Developing, validating, and optimizing e-motor control algorithms and software for electrified vehicles with an accent on model-based design, calibration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. Focus on designing control algorithms, solving complex e-drive issues, and validating performance through simulations, motor emulators, dynamometers, and production release testing.

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States; on-site

Company

Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America develops automotive software and electrified vehicle technologies for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and refine e-motor control algorithms using MATLAB, Simulink, Target Link, and automated code generation.
  • Verify and validate algorithms through simulation, motor emulators, Hardware-in-the-Loop systems, and dynamometer testing.
  • Calibrate electric motor control software to meet performance, functionality, and diagnostic requirements for electrified powertrains.
  • Design, maintain, and execute automated and manual test cases; process test data and produce reports for production releases.
  • Diagnose complex e-drive issues and coordinate issue resolution with cross-functional teams, internal stakeholders, and suppliers.
  • Manage motor control requirements and project metrics in product lifecycle management tools, and support capacity planning for future motor, power electronics, and software variants.

Requirements

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, preferably with a focus on control algorithms.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience with AC IPM and induction motors, automotive motor control, model-based design, simulation, and algorithm development.
  • Expertise with calibration tools such as Vector CANape, INCA, or LabVIEW, plus scripting for data processing, reporting, data acquisition, and test automation.
  • Familiarity with automotive software development, requirements engineering, and Automotive SPICE processes.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, ownership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Valid driver's license; the role may involve access to export-controlled technology under United States regulations.

Nice to have

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Research experience and advanced theoretical knowledge of motor control strategies.
  • Hands-on experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop systems, motor emulators, and dynamometers.
  • Knowledge of motor control hardware, circuit design, high-power inverters, driver stages, PCB layout, and control logic.
  • German language skills.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative environment focused on continuous learning and automotive innovation.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and families.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Up to 15 company-paid holidays, paid time off, sick time, and parental leave.
  • Tuition assistance and wellness or fitness reimbursement programs.
