Protection Engineer (Power Systems)

Location: Rosemead, California, US. Hybrid work with required attendance at an SCE facility; employees must work and reside in California. Up to 25% travel throughout the SCE service territory. Relocation does not apply.

Salary: $129,200–$193,700 per year

What you will do

• Resolve complex technical issues and provide engineering expertise for high-impact, cross-functional problems.
• Support protection engineering for power generation assets, capital improvement projects, and operations and maintenance activities.
• Lead and coordinate full-time and contract employees implementing technical strategies, equipment, and engineering standards.
• Conduct life-cycle and risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and improve preventive maintenance procedures.
• Maintain facility design basis documentation and coordinate complex engineering studies and projects.
• Support audits, inspections, compliance activities, and technical training for junior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or in a scientific, technical, or mathematics field.
• At least five years of engineering experience in operations, production, construction, or maintenance environments.
• Valid Class C driver’s license.
• Experience with power system protection engineering, including protection relays and schemes, relay settings, coordination studies, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of fault analysis, short-circuit studies, protection coordination, relay settings validation, and medium- and high-voltage systems.
• Must work and reside in California; hybrid facility attendance is required.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Systems focus.
• Experience with ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, CYME, or similar protection engineering software.
• Knowledge of legacy electromechanical and modern digital relays, system modernization, and migration strategies.
• Experience with NERC/WECC requirements, NERC/CIP compliance, arc flash mitigation, and battery energy storage or inverter-based resources.
• Experience interpreting one-line diagrams, schematics, control logic, and relay drawings and supporting commissioning and design reviews.
