Mechanical Automation Project Engineer (Automation)

Location: Norwood, Massachusetts, United States of America. Primarily onsite in an office environment, with periodic exposure to manufacturing operations and occasional domestic and international travel.

Starting salary: $91,200–$114,000 per year, depending on experience, relevant skills, and qualifications.

What you will do

• Design custom automation systems for testing medical devices, aerospace components, consumer electronics, packaging materials, and other products.
• Develop robotic specimen handling systems, automated material testing cells, custom fixturing, motion control systems, safety guarding, and machine integrations.
• Lead engineering projects from concept through customer delivery while meeting design specifications and project schedules.
• Contribute across quoting, design, procurement, manufacturing, testing, installation, and customer support.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineers, manufacturing, sales, service teams, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
• Provide input on material selection, finishes, manufacturing processes, design limitations, cost, and manufacturability.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• 3+ years of engineering experience in a design or manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks for models, drawings, and FEA.
• Experience with machine design, mechanical drive systems, kinematics, mechanisms, ergonomics, and design for manufacturability.
• Experience setting up and conducting system tests, data acquisition, statistical analysis, data summaries, and technical reports.
• Ability to independently lead complex projects, prioritize multiple tasks, communicate effectively, and deliver designs on tight timelines.

Nice to have

• PMP certification.
• Software or electrical engineering skills.
• Experience with motion control, pneumatic systems, robotics, machine safety systems, and automated manufacturing equipment.
• Knowledge of materials testing or willingness to learn the field.
