TL;DR
Sr Automation Engineer (Mechanical Automation and Medical Devices): Designing, implementing, validating, and continuously improving automated assembly and packaging equipment for high-volume wearable medical devices with an accent on machine design, robotics, packaging technologies, and regulated manufacturing. Focus on managing IQ/OQ, FAT, SAT, and PQ activities, leading vendors and cross-functional projects, and transferring validated technologies to new factory sites.

Location: Acton, Massachusetts, United States. Hybrid working arrangement with required on-site work from an office; approximately 30% domestic and international travel.

Annual base salary: $105,700–$158,500 for U.S.-based positions. Incentive compensation may also apply.

What you will do

  • Design, specify, implement, and continuously improve automated assembly and packaging equipment.
  • Support manufacturing operations, new product development, obsolescence programs, and technology transfers.
  • Manage equipment specification, vendor collaboration, procurement, installation, startup, commissioning, and performance improvement.
  • Lead IQ, OQ, FAT, SAT, and PQ activities for new or transferred assembly and packaging technologies.
  • Develop conceptual automation solutions for complex products while integrating regulatory, operational, and cost requirements.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and build capability through process improvements, training aids, and SOPs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; a master’s degree is a plus.
  • At least 6 years of hands-on machine design experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with pneumatics, linkage design, mechatronics, robotics, and drive systems.
  • Experience with automated discrete-component assembly or packaging equipment, including acceptance, installation, commissioning, and validation.
  • Experience with packaging systems such as cartoning, conveyors, bagging, sealing, and blister forming, plus process technologies such as ultrasonic welding and laser welding.
  • Ability to lead vendors and cross-functional projects in a regulated manufacturing environment, with strong communication and structured problem-solving skills.

Nice to have

  • Medical device or other regulated-industry experience.
  • Knowledge of CE, UL, SCCR, NFPA-70E/79, DIN, ASME, or ISO standards.
  • Proficiency with CAD modeling software, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Working knowledge of Minitab or JMP and data-driven decision-making.
  • Formal project management and post-implementation continuous improvement experience.
