Senior Controls Engineer (Solar/BESS Controls)

Location: United States; U.S. remote-based candidates considered, preferably in the Pacific (PST) time zone

Salary: $113,000–$141,525 per year, plus annual bonus

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain plant-level control logic for utility-scale solar PV and BESS facilities, including PPC, EMS, and supervisory control systems.
• Develop strategies for active and reactive power control, frequency response, voltage regulation, ramp-rate limiting, and battery state-of-charge management.
• Review OEM and EPC control designs, define inverter and BESS control interfaces, and work with protocols including Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
• Develop and validate controller models in PSS/E and PSCAD/EMTDC and support NERC MOD-026/MOD-027 submissions and ISO/RTO reviews.
• Create test plans and support HIL, factory acceptance, and site acceptance testing, including setpoint, alarm, trip logic, and SCADA communications validation.
• Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, corrective actions, technical documentation, design reviews, and coaching for less-experienced engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent education and relevant experience.
• At least 5 years of controls engineering experience, including utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS projects.
• Experience developing grid-connected renewable energy control strategies and commissioning PPC or EMS systems.
• IEC 61131-3 control logic experience with Codesys, AcSELerator, Beckhoff TwinCAT, or equivalent PLC-based platforms.
• Working knowledge of PSS/E and/or PSCAD, plus communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, and SunSpec.
• Ability to work from the United States; Pacific time zone location is preferred.

Nice to have

• HIL testing experience with RTDS/RSCAD, OPAL-RT, or Speedgoat.
• MATLAB/Simulink experience for control modeling or algorithm prototyping.
• BESS dispatch optimization, degradation-aware SOC management, or demand response control experience.
• Experience with Emerson Ovation, ABB Ability, or Schweitzer SEL platforms.
• PE license, interconnection experience with ERCOT, CAISO, MISO, PJM, or WECC, or familiarity with OT/ICS cybersecurity frameworks.
