TL;DR
Electrical Engineering Lead (Aerospace): Leading the electrical engineering function for an aircraft autonomy system with an accent on electrical architecture, COTS/MOTS subsystem integration, and certification-ready designs. Focus on solving complex power distribution, signal integrity, and EMI/EMC challenges, coordinating integration and flight-test investigations, and guiding a team across concurrent aircraft programs.

Location: Hybrid, based on-site at Merlin HQ in Boston, Massachusetts, United States; up to 25% domestic and international travel may be required.

Salary: $165,000–$215,000 per year, base salary only, plus equity consideration.

What you will do

  • Lead, mentor, and grow the electrical engineering team responsible for aircraft autonomy electrical architecture.
  • Own technical planning, priorities, schedules, budgets, resource allocation, and execution across multiple aircraft programs.
  • Guide architecture decisions, design trade studies, and integration and verification of COTS/MOTS electronic subsystems.
  • Review electrical designs, fabrication drawings, test plans, reports, installation documentation, and certification materials.
  • Partner with software, systems, mechanical, certification, and flight-test leaders to meet program milestones.
  • Own high-risk electrical design problems and lead root-cause investigations through corrective-action closure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 8+ years of systems-level electrical design and integration experience in aviation or aerospace.
  • 2+ years of direct people management experience or equivalent technical leadership and mentorship experience.
  • Experience integrating and debugging COTS/MOTS modules, custom circuits, software, sensors, and human-machine interfaces.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, ARINC 429, RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, plus system schematics, wiring diagrams, and subsystem block diagrams.
  • Experience with aerospace wire harnesses, connectors, suppliers, engineering schedules, budgets, and resource planning.

Nice to have

  • Aircraft systems experience in avionics, communications, and power distribution or management.
  • Knowledge of RTCA DO-160, DO-178, DO-254, MIL-STD-461, or MIL-STD-810.
  • Experience with aircraft certification programs, FAA Part 23/25, STC efforts, certification authorities, or DERs.
  • Hands-on lab, field, and aircraft experience, including soldering, wiring, crimping, and cable assembly.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, Altium, or KiCAD, and experience scaling teams in a startup or fast-growth environment.
