Systems Engineer - Defence (Opto-Electronic and Sensor Systems)

Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom; hybrid attendance 3–4 days per week in Glasgow or Edinburgh

Salary: GBP 35,000–GBP 65,000 per year

What you will do

• Deliver systems engineering activities across the full V-model lifecycle, from requirements capture and architecture through integration, verification, validation, and delivery.
• Capture, manage, and maintain system requirements in DOORS or similar tools, ensuring traceability between requirements, design, and testing.
• Define system architectures, interfaces, boundaries, and functional behaviour for complex real-time systems.
• Lead and support integration activities across embedded software and sensor subsystems.
• Plan and execute integration and system-level testing, including verification and validation activities.
• Participate in design reviews, technical governance, risk-based decision-making, defect management, upgrades, and configuration control.

Requirements

• 5+ years of relevant systems engineering experience in defence, aerospace, or safety-critical environments.
• Experience with the left-hand side of the V-model, including requirements, design, and architecture.
• Hands-on experience with requirements elicitation, decomposition, and traceability.
• Experience using DOORS or similar requirements management tools.
• Experience supporting integration, verification, and validation of complex systems, with strong understanding of system interfaces and integration challenges.
• Willingness and eligibility to obtain SC security clearance is required. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or an equivalent technical military background, is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with opto-electronic, optical, or sensor-based systems.
• Knowledge of MBSE, SysML, or other systems modelling techniques.
• Experience decomposing complex systems into subsystem architectures.
• Knowledge of real-time embedded systems and test procedure development.
• Background in maritime or defence programmes.
