Principal Systems Engineer (Product Development)

Location: Farnborough, United Kingdom. Candidates must hold sole British nationality and hold, or be eligible to achieve, UK Developed Vetting (DV) Clearance.

What you will do

• Define product features, system behaviour, architecture, and interdisciplinary design trade-offs for advanced security devices.
• Lead technical requirements elicitation, structuring, and management across electronics, FPGA, software, and mechanical engineering disciplines using IBM DOORS.
• Guide engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle, identifying technical risks, investigating root causes, and driving resolution.
• Oversee product verification, validation, environmental qualification, and customer acceptance activities.
• Prepare engineering estimates and support technical proposals for competitive bids.
• Work directly with defence customers to clarify requirements and ensure the product meets operational needs.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience developing physical electronic/software products in the defence, aerospace, or space sectors.
• Degree-level qualification in engineering, electronic design, computer science, physics, or a related technical field.
• Experience across the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements management, system design, architecture, and verification.
• Ability to work across hardware, software, FPGA, and mechanical engineering domains with strong system-level thinking.
• Strong technical documentation and communication skills, including negotiating requirements with defence customers.
• Sole British nationality and eligibility to obtain UK DV Clearance are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with SysML, UML, use case analysis, and trade studies.
• Knowledge of DEF STAN and MIL-STD environmental and EMC testing standards.
• Experience estimating engineering effort and writing technical proposals.
• Familiarity with the NCSC CAPS assurance process.
• Ability to manage complexity, uncertainty, and competing programme demands.
