Senior Software Engineer (m/f/d) Data (AI)

Location: Berlin, Germany; 80% office presence and 20% mobile working

What you will do

• Build, test, deploy, and operate production-grade data products, pipelines, services, and modeled datasets.
• Apply backend engineering practices through clean code, APIs, automated testing, observability, and operational ownership.
• Design schemas, data contracts, and domain models that handle schema evolution, late data, and real business requirements.
• Improve data quality through checks, lineage, freshness, documentation, and clear ownership.
• Partner with product, engineering, data science, analysts, and other stakeholders to deliver reliable data products.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers while improving reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.

Requirements

• Senior-level experience delivering and operating backend systems, data products, APIs, services, or pipelines end-to-end in a cloud environment.
• Strong Python skills and experience writing clean, tested, maintainable production code; willingness to quickly learn Go and other tools.
• Experience or transferable expertise in data modeling, schema evolution, incremental and idempotent processing, and late data handling.
• Sound judgment regarding APIs, data contracts, schemas, ownership boundaries, compute costs, and technical trade-offs.
• Strong understanding of data quality, lineage, freshness, observability, documentation, and production operations.
• Degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent expertise demonstrated through experience and impact.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud data platforms, lakehouse platforms, and high-throughput processing.
• Ability to transition from senior backend engineering into data engineering or combine both disciplines.
