Director of Engineering (AI)

Location: Palo Alto, California, United States; hybrid

Salary: $250,000–$325,000 per year, plus equity and bonus

What you will do

• Lead and scale the engineering organization, including Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, customer-facing engineering groups, and Forward Deployed Engineering.
• Partner with the CEO and executive leadership to define roadmaps, align engineering capacity with business priorities, and translate product vision into execution.
• Set technical strategy, architecture principles, and infrastructure direction for high-volume real-time data and AI agent workflows.
• Establish metrics and operating practices for delivery velocity, system reliability, code quality, incident response, and operational health.
• Engage with enterprise customers and prospects to connect technical investments with user needs and business value.
• Drive hiring strategy, executive recruiting, engineering culture, career ladders, succession planning, and scalable organizational processes.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience and at least 3+ years in a senior leadership role managing managers and multi-team organizations.
• Experience scaling engineering teams and organizational structures through major growth phases, such as from 30 to 100+ engineers.
• Strong product and business judgment, including translating product objectives into engineering roadmaps and resource plans.
• Deep technical background with the ability to evaluate architectural trade-offs and participate in complex technical discussions.
• Experience collaborating with Product, Design, Sales, and Customer Success executives in fast-paced startup environments.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication, including presenting technical strategy to executives, boards, and customers.

Nice to have

• Experience in B2B SaaS, social data platforms, developer tools, or marketing technology.
• Experience overseeing AI-powered systems, real-time analytics platforms, or agentic frameworks at scale.
• Familiarity with AWS, TypeScript, React, Postgres, ClickHouse, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Pulumi.
• Experience overseeing web and native mobile application ecosystems.
