Director of Engineering (AI)

Location: On-site at 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Salary: $250,000–$330,000 base plus equity, commensurate with experience and demonstrated leadership impact.

What you will do

• Lead engineering execution across backend platforms, infrastructure, and AI-powered systems.
• Directly manage and develop Principal and Senior Engineers across platform teams.
• Plan engineering roadmaps, sprint execution, delivery forecasts, and realistic commitments with leadership.
• Own hiring, onboarding, leveling, and engineer development decisions.
• Set standards for code reviews, technical documentation, incident response, and team rituals.
• Coordinate production incidents and improve uptime, SLA adherence, and operational reliability.

Requirements

• 5+ years of engineering management experience, including direct management of senior or principal-level engineers.
• Prior hands-on engineering experience with deep backend expertise and the ability to reason about production code.
• Experience shipping complex software products on time and at scale.
• Experience leading cloud-native, distributed systems in production.
• Technical fluency with Python, microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, Kubernetes, Terraform, cloud platforms, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL systems.
• Familiarity with LLM-powered product development and evaluation pipelines, plus experience hiring and developing engineers in a startup or high-growth company.

• Experience with vector and graph databases.
• Leadership experience in an AI-native or LLM-powered product company.
• Experience leading platform or infrastructure modernization that improved reliability or delivery velocity.
• Experience scaling engineering teams from early stage through enterprise-grade production environments.
