General Counsel

Location: Palo Alto, California, United States; based at the Palo Alto headquarters.

Base salary: $330,000–$450,000 per year, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Lead legal strategy for complex collaborations, partnerships, and institutional arrangements.
• Advise leadership on governance, compliance, conflicts, regulatory, and risk matters.
• Oversee agreements with academic, industry, nonprofit, and strategic partners.
• Identify legal pathways for new initiatives while protecting the Institute's interests.
• Build legal processes, policies, and frameworks that support clear and responsible execution.
• Manage and develop the legal team, including the existing IP and licensing function, and supervise outside counsel.

Requirements

• JD and active membership in the State Bar of California, or eligibility to practice immediately as Registered In-House Counsel in California.
• 15+ years of relevant legal experience, including significant corporate, transactional, technology transfer, engineering, life sciences, or related legal work.
• Experience as an executive team leader and people manager with a record of mentorship and skill development.
• Ability to advise senior stakeholders on complex legal and strategic matters.
• Experience leading or materially supporting high-stakes negotiations and transactions.
• Strong judgment, communication skills, discretion, and ability to move complex matters forward.

Nice to have

• Experience structuring novel or complex legal arrangements in innovation-driven environments.
• Experience managing IP professionals or supervising external IP counsel.
• Experience in biotech, life sciences, technology, or similarly fast-moving sectors.
