TL;DR
Sr. Automation Mechanical Engineer (Automation): Designing, building, and commissioning custom automated manufacturing equipment for scalable aerospace production with an accent on mechanical design, robotics, material handling, and production tooling. Focus on applying mechanics and kinematics to novel challenges, integrating mechanical and control components, and resolving issues during equipment startup and production ramp-up.

Location: Huntsville, Alabama, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, current permanent residents, or lawfully admitted refugees or asylees.

Base pay range for Colorado applicants: $181,626.00–$254,275.35 annually. Other site ranges may differ.

What you will do

  • Lead the mechanical design of custom automated manufacturing equipment using 3D CAD.
  • Design robotic end-of-arm tooling, material handling systems, fixtures, weldments, machine frames, safety guarding, and production cell layouts.
  • Apply mechanics, kinematics, materials science, and engineering first principles to evaluate designs and solve novel mechanical challenges.
  • Integrate mechanical, electronic, pneumatic, robotic, and control-system components into unified equipment.
  • Lead equipment commissioning, startup, debugging, and production ramp-up while resolving mechanical issues.
  • Prepare BOMs, drawings, spare-parts lists, assembly procedures, project schedule input, and budget input.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • At least 6 years of experience designing, assembling, and commissioning custom automated tooling or manufacturing equipment from scratch.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD, including Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of control systems, robotics, and automated industrial equipment and processes.
  • Ability to create, interpret, and review mechanical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • U.S. citizenship or nationality, U.S. permanent residency, refugee status, or asylum status is required.

Nice to have

  • Advanced Creo parametric modeling, including top-down design and family tables.
  • Experience with ANSYS or similar structural, FEA, or multiphysics simulation software.
  • Familiarity with PLC, robot, CNC, and industrial control programming.
  • Experience reviewing electrical drawings and delivering automated equipment from concept through production ramp-up.
  • Experience applying Design for Automated Manufacturing principles and diagnosing complex system failures.
