Associate Director of External Communications (Business)

Location: New York, United States

Annual salary: $200,000–$240,000, depending on geographic location, experience, and skill set.

What you will do

• Lead strategic external communications programs, proactive media relations, and reputation-building initiatives for the business department.
• Manage in-house and agency communications professionals and maintain relationships with national print, broadcast, and online media.
• Develop communications strategies with department and business practice leadership to support strategic priorities and strengthen market positioning.
• Write and edit press releases, media pitches, talking points, statements, messaging, and responses.
• Lead awards and recognitions programs, thought leadership, social media campaigns, and content promotion.
• Serve as a media spokesperson and advise leaders and lawyers on reputation management, crisis communications, media training, and sensitive matters.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of direct communications or public relations experience with B2B clients, including 4 or more years of management experience.
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business, or a related field.
• Experience leading teams, including hiring, employee development, work assignment, performance management, coaching, and corrective counseling.
• Strong knowledge of national media, financial markets, business concepts, crisis communications, digital marketing, social media strategy, and content creation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex legal and business information.
• Ability to work extended or weekend hours and travel as required.

Nice to have

• Experience in a law firm, professional services organization, or PR agency.
• 10 or more years of applicable experience.
