Director, External Communications (Insurtech)

Salary: $157,417.86–$190,000 per year, plus equity and bonus and/or commission eligibility

What you will do

• Lead earned media strategy across trade, business, and technology press, building relationships with journalists, editors, and producers.
• Drive thought leadership placements, including bylines, contributed articles, executive interviews, and feature coverage.
• Own spokesperson readiness, press releases, media monitoring, PR measurement, and the external PR agency relationship.
• Build and continuously improve the crisis communications playbook, including escalation protocols, holding statements, response frameworks, and post-incident reviews.
• Lead communications during active crises in partnership with legal, HR, executive leadership, and internal communications.
• Maintain analyst relationships and track coverage, sentiment, and perspectives relevant to product, sales, and executive leadership.

Requirements

• 12+ years of communications experience, including at least 6 years focused on B2B technology PR.
• Proven success earning meaningful coverage in trade and business press.
• Hands-on experience owning or co-leading crisis communications during at least one live, high-stakes situation.
• Experience managing external PR agencies with clear accountability for outcomes.
• Strong executive communication skills and the ability to advise and challenge C-suite leaders under pressure.
• Experience with analyst relations; familiarity with insurance, financial services, or enterprise software is preferred, with direct insurance experience a significant advantage.
