Data Journalist (Mutual Funds and ETFs)

Location: New York; hybrid model requiring staff to work onsite 50% of the time

What you will do

• Develop original, data-driven stories about the mutual fund and ETF industry and the boards overseeing those products.
• Source, collect, clean, analyse, and interpret structured and unstructured datasets.
• Build charts, graphics, and interactive visualisations that strengthen editorial storytelling and audience engagement.
• Use public records, databases, APIs, web scraping, and proprietary datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and reporting opportunities.
• Deliver both long-term investigative projects and shorter-turnaround stories responding to industry news and emerging trends.
• Collaborate with reporters, editors, and visual journalists while supporting the development of data journalism capabilities.

Requirements

• Professional journalism or reporting experience; this is an editorial journalism role rather than a data analyst or data science position.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, research, and data interpretation skills.
• Ability to communicate data and findings clearly to varied audiences.
• Experience managing multiple priorities and collaborating across teams and subject areas.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, transparency, and journalistic integrity.
• Interest in developing technical skills in Python, R, data visualisation, databases, or related analytical tools.
