TL;DR
Materials Test Engineer (Nuclear): Developing and executing materials-testing programs for advanced nuclear technology with an accent on test-method development, laboratory execution, data validation, and failure investigation. Focus on analyzing material behavior, assessing measurement uncertainty, commissioning laboratory capabilities, and producing technically defensible reports.

Location: Idaho Falls, ID, United States; onsite laboratory work. Travel may reach 10%. Remote employees must travel to the Santa Clara, CA headquarters twice per quarter, and onboarding requires two weeks in person at headquarters.

Salary: $90,000–$150,000 per year, dependent on experience.

What you will do

  • Plan and develop materials-characterization and testing programs, including test plans, procedures, work instructions, equipment requirements, and data-collection methods.
  • Lead or support laboratory test setup, equipment checkout, specimen installation, test execution, monitoring, and post-test activities.
  • Validate and analyze test data, assess uncertainty and repeatability, identify anomalies, and calculate material properties.
  • Prepare test reports, materials evaluations, failure-analysis reports, engineering memoranda, data summaries, and recommendations.
  • Support procurement of laboratory equipment, specimens, fixtures, instrumentation, consumables, and testing services.
  • Establish and improve laboratory capabilities, calibration practices, maintenance programs, specimen storage, test templates, and safe operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, welding engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience interpreting test data and preparing clear technical reports.
  • Ability to lift, move, and position objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate motor vehicles when required.
  • Applicants must meet the definition of a U.S. person under applicable export-control laws.
  • Strong fundamentals in physical metallurgy, mechanical behavior, microstructure, phase transformations, heat treatment, degradation mechanisms, and material-processing relationships.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, welding engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
  • Materials-testing experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense, power-generation, chemical-processing, or other highly regulated applications.
  • Experience with molten sodium or other molten alkali-metal systems.
  • Familiarity with ASME NQA-1 requirements, including test control, calibration, procurement, document control, traceability, and configuration management.
  • Experience designing or commissioning laboratory equipment, fixtures, environmental chambers, or custom test systems.
