Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States, or based at HQ in Ventura, California

Salary: $210,000–$300,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

• Architect scalable, reliable, and long-lasting systems across multiple teams and projects.
• Lead architecture reviews and design discussions, aligning new work with a coherent technical strategy.
• Unblock engineers by debugging complex issues and resolving difficult technical problems.
• Write and ship production code regularly across backend and frontend systems, using AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Claude, and Bedrock.
• Mentor engineers at all levels and help develop future technical leaders.
• Identify technical debt and systemic risks, drive cross-team improvements, and translate business priorities into technical roadmaps.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building production software.
• Experience owning architecture and technical direction beyond a single team or project.
• Strong system design experience for scalable and reliable production infrastructure.
• Full-stack range with depth in backend systems such as TypeScript, Node, Postgres, Redis, and NATS, and/or UI technologies including React and React Native.
• Fluency with AI-paired development using Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent tools, including the judgment to apply appropriate human review.
• Demonstrated mentorship, strong communication, and the ability to influence teams without formal authority.

Nice to have

• Experience scaling systems through major growth, such as 10x traffic, re-architecture, or platform migration.
• Experience identifying systemic problems and driving fixes across multiple teams.
• Experience establishing AI-paired development standards adopted by other engineers.
• Previous experience as a tech lead, staff engineer, or architect at a fast-moving startup.
