Embedded Firmware Engineer (Space Systems)

Location: Remote role based in Beavercreek, Ohio, USA, with additional location at Wright Patterson AFB and occasional in-person work at a Booz Allen or customer facility.

Salary: $99,000–$225,000 annualized USD

What you will do

• Design, implement, and test embedded software architectures for next-generation satellite systems.
• Develop real-time software interfacing with FPGA-based processing pipelines and spacecraft subsystems.
• Translate system-level requirements into reliable embedded software implementations.
• Integrate software with custom digital hardware and onboard electronics.
• Collaborate with FPGA, RF, and systems engineers on digital design, verification, and system integration.
• Support software–hardware debugging, automated testing, configuration management, and CI/CD.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience developing embedded software in C or C++.
• Experience with embedded Linux, RTOS development, or bare-metal firmware.
• Experience with real-time systems or high-reliability applications.
• Experience integrating software with FPGA-based systems and using hardware debugging tools.
• Knowledge of software architecture, communication interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, or LVDS, and hardware abstraction layers.
• Secret clearance and eligibility for access to classified information are required. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with space-qualified embedded systems or satellite subsystem design.
• Experience with Yocto, BitBake, U-Boot, device trees, embedded cybersecurity, secure boot, or trusted execution environments.
• Experience with DSP algorithms, real-time signal processing, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or digital twins.
• Knowledge of MBSE, radiation-tolerant computing, RF systems, telemetry, command subsystems, or spacecraft communication protocols.
