TL;DR
Thermal Systems Lead Engineer - Sustainable Design (Data Centers/Sustainability): Developing sustainability standards and methodologies for quantifying the benefits of sustainable data center reference designs with an accent on energy and water efficiency, decarbonization, and life cycle impact. Focus on leading system-level LCAs and EPDs, defining PUE/WUE/CUE metrics, and coordinating thermal, mechanical, electrical, and power engineering roadmaps.

Location: Virtual; Davidson, North Carolina, United States

Annual base salary: $95,700–$199,300; incentive eligible.

What you will do

  • Partner with engineering leads across technical, mechanical, electrical, and power disciplines to develop sustainable data center system roadmaps.
  • Act as an internal expert on current and emerging sustainable data center technologies.
  • Develop sustainability standards and metrics for reference designs, including PUE, WUE, carbon footprint, and sound levels.
  • Lead the quantification of sustainability benefits for data center architectures and solutions.
  • Manage system-level Life Cycle Assessments and Environmental Product Declarations with the enterprise sustainability team.
  • Coach junior engineers and represent the organization in regulatory and industry forums.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 7–10 years of engineering experience focused on sustainable designs for mission-critical facilities and data centers.
  • Experience with sustainable building design, energy modeling, or life cycle assessment.
  • Deep knowledge of data center sustainability metrics, including PUE, WUE, and CUE.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and green building certifications.
  • Strong thermal/fluid energy, controls, analytical, communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with PLC controls.
  • Experience with onsite power generation or backup power distribution.
  • Knowledge of HVAC products, components, and systems.
