TL;DR
HVAC Mechanical Design Engineer (Nuclear): Designing and developing HVAC and other mechanical systems and components for nuclear plant and process systems with an accent on system architecture, thermal and hydraulic analysis, CAD modeling, and design documentation. Focus on managing requirements, technical integration, engineering changes, procurement support, and verification across the complete system development lifecycle.

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States; 4 days onsite. Work hours are 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel up to 10% as needed.

Salary: Level III $120,000–$145,000; Level IV $130,000–$160,000; Level V $165,000–$195,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Design and develop HVAC and other mechanical systems and components from requirements through operational readiness.
  • Create and maintain CAD engineering models, system architectures, layouts, drawings, design descriptions, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Perform and oversee structural, thermal, hydraulic, and process analyses for structures, systems, and components.
  • Manage systems engineering processes, technical integration, requirements verification, configuration changes, risks, and design reviews.
  • Lead external engineering partners, subcontractors, and small groups of engineers while supporting procurement and acceptance of equipment and services.
  • Apply nuclear safety, quality assurance, regulatory, licensing, industry code, and design standard requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Typically 5, 10, or 15 years of mechanical engineering experience for Level III, IV, or V, respectively; advanced degrees may substitute for part of the experience.
  • Experience with mechanical process equipment design, procurement, installation, or operation.
  • Experience developing mechanical systems, including HVAC, steam, feedwater, condensate, fire protection, drainage, compressed air, water-based, or nuclear systems.
  • Knowledge of requirements management and verification, systems engineering processes, and nuclear power plant licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Technical proficiency in mechanical design fundamentals for structural and fluidic components, mechanisms, or manufacturing and processing equipment.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing or operating HVAC process equipment.
  • Experience working in the nuclear industry.
