TL;DR
Thermal Systems Lead Engineer - Mechanical Loop (Data Center Cooling): Designing efficient, resilient, and scalable mechanical-loop thermal infrastructure for AI data centers with an accent on chillers, dry-coolers, thermal storage, pumps, and heat rejection systems. Focus on developing multi-generational roadmaps, integrating advanced cooling technologies with technical-loop architectures, and achieving PUE and WUE sustainability targets.

Location: Virtual, based in Davidson, North Carolina, United States; overnight travel of 5–15% may be required, including occasional international travel.

Annual base salary: $95,700–$199,300. Incentive eligible; not sales commission eligible.

What you will do

  • Lead multi-generational mechanical-loop system roadmaps for AI data centers of varying scales.
  • Design facility-side thermal infrastructure, including chillers, dry-coolers, thermal storage, pumps, cooling towers, and heat rejection equipment.
  • Translate customer requirements into technical specifications for equipment and controls teams.
  • Collaborate with external partners, including NVIDIA, to align cooling solutions with future chip architectures such as DSX2 and beyond.
  • Evaluate and integrate new cooling technologies into reference designs while meeting PUE and WUE sustainability targets.
  • Mentor junior engineers and represent the company in ASHRAE and Open Compute Project standards work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 7–10 years of engineering experience with a current focus on thermal system management and data center cooling.
  • Experience designing mechanical cooling systems for mission-critical facilities, preferably data centers.
  • In-depth knowledge of chiller plants, pumping systems, cooling towers, air handling systems, and HVAC products.
  • Ability to speak and write in English; U.S.-based virtual work arrangement.
  • Strong technical analysis, communication, collaboration, customer-facing, and knowledge-transfer skills.

Nice to have

  • PLC controls experience.
  • Experience with onsite power generation or backup power distribution.
  • Strong thermal/fluid energy or controls background.
  • Experience participating in professional engineering societies.
