TL;DR
Solar Array Test Engineer (Aerospace): Designing, planning, and executing tests for solar array systems and subassemblies with an accent on electrical performance, mechanical integrity, environmental durability, and flight readiness. Focus on developing test plans and fixtures, analyzing photovoltaic and instrumentation data, and solving anomalies through root-cause investigations and re-testing.

Location: Redondo Beach, United States; onsite. Applicants must be U.S. Persons or eligible to obtain an export license under ITAR/EAR.

Salary: $110,000–$150,000 per year, plus potential stock options and benefits.

What you will do

  • Design, plan, and execute electrical performance tests for solar arrays, including I-V characterization and efficiency measurements.
  • Plan and run environmental and durability testing, including thermal cycling, UV exposure, vibration, and shock.
  • Develop test plans, procedures, and acceptance criteria from system and component requirements.
  • Design, build, and validate test fixtures, harnesses, and high-power test setups.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, suppliers, power electronics, and systems engineering teams to close test gaps and improve reliability.
  • Investigate anomalies, determine root causes, and define re-test plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of direct hardware test engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of photovoltaic behavior, electroluminescence, and solar array performance drivers.
  • Experience with electrical and thermal instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with environmental and mechanical test methods, laboratory safety, and data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Clear technical communication and documentation skills.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Direct experience testing solar arrays or photovoltaic hardware.
  • Familiarity with IEC, UL, MIL-STD, NASA, and ECSS standards.
  • Experience with thermal-vacuum, radiation or UV degradation, or arc-fault characterization testing.
  • Experience driving cross-functional closure of test anomalies and design improvements.
