Senior Mechanical Engineer - Machine Design (Nuclear)

Location: Must be based in the United States and work on-site at the headquarters in Austin, Texas. Periodic travel to the reactor facility in Idaho is required.

What you will do

• Own the producibility of fuel-handling hardware from concept through production, including welded structures, machined components, sheet metal parts, shielding assemblies, and sealing interfaces.
• Partner with design engineers to ensure hardware is buildable, testable, and inspectable.
• Lead in-house fabrication of test rigs, sodium immersion casks, peripheral test equipment, and full-scale prototypes.
• Decide which subassemblies should be built in-house or outsourced, and manage external vendors when needed.
• Develop weld procedures, tooling, fixtures, and inspection plans for stainless steel and sodium-service materials.
• Coordinate factory-floor work with welders, machinists, and assembly technicians while supporting installation and commissioning at the reactor facility.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
• 6+ years of manufacturing engineering experience with complex mechanical hardware.
• Hands-on expertise in multiple areas including welding, machining, sheet metal forming, assembly, and metrology.
• Experience taking parts from drawings through reliable production and leading cross-functional teams.
• Comfort working hands-on in a factory environment, including fabrication and assembly, standing for extended periods, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
• Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Persons and may not hold non-compliant foreign citizenships under 10 CFR Part 810.

Nice to have

• Stainless steel TIG/GTAW welding experience for high-purity, vacuum, or sodium-service hardware.
• CNC machining of complex parts and tight-tolerance assemblies.
• CWI, CWE, or similar weld inspection certification.
• Experience with GD&T, CMM, laser trackers, or optical comparators.
• Background in nuclear, aerospace, semiconductor, vacuum, or other high-reliability industries.
