Senior Software Engineer, Back-End (Java)

Location: Hybrid in McLean, Virginia, with 3 days per week onsite. Candidates must reside in the U.S. and hold U.S. Citizenship or a Green Card.

Annual base salary: $135,000–$210,000 USD.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain Java 21 and Spring Boot microservices and shared libraries.
• Develop Apache Flink stream-processing jobs and Kafka producers, consumers, and service utilities for high-volume session and event data.
• Integrate services through REST APIs and internal clients across a multi-repository Maven environment.
• Optimize MySQL, ClickHouse, Elasticsearch, and other storage systems, including schemas and queries.
• Own production performance, availability, observability, monitoring, testing, code reviews, and on-call support.
• Investigate complex issues across services, platforms, databases, and cloud infrastructure while maintaining security and data isolation in a multi-tenant system.

Requirements

• Must reside in the U.S. and hold U.S. Citizenship or a Green Card to meet AWS GovCloud compliance requirements.
• 5+ years of experience building backend services with modern Java, Java 17+, and Spring Boot.
• Experience with Maven multi-module projects, dependency management, multi-tenant architecture, and MySQL data modeling and query optimization.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or comparable streaming and batch-processing frameworks such as Flink, Kafka Streams, or Spark.
• Experience designing, testing, operating, logging, and debugging production-grade REST APIs.
• Experience deploying services and managing infrastructure in a major cloud provider, preferably AWS, and participating in an on-call rotation.

Nice to have

• Experience with GovCloud, Kubernetes, containerized infrastructure, and multitenant SaaS architectures.
• Experience migrating large Java and Spring codebases and working with ClickHouse, schema evolution, Avro, or event-driven design.
• Familiarity with MongoDB, Redis, Memcached, observability tools, Prometheus, Grafana, distributed tracing, and advanced database performance tuning.
• Production experience with Go and object-oriented databases.
